Robin Richard Ross was born in the Blue Hills of the Nilgris, Southern India in 1949 and has been painting ever since. His figurative and landscape paintings often present a world familiar to him; the saturated colour of his youth in India, the seaside beach scenes of Ramsgate where he now lives, Cuban dancers and blues musicians bringing to life his passions and the eccentric London characters from many years spent there. The familiarity is always married with a mystery and sensuality. In his own words he is solely interested in ‘living in the mystery of our world….I agree wholeheartedly with Picasso that If you want to be a painter make sure your next painting is nothing like the last one.’ Robin is prolific in his output, covering canvas, furniture and even floors with paint. He is never bored and creating works is simply something that he has always done for himself.

Since moving to Ramsgate 12 years ago Robin’s practice has been almost entirely concerned with capturing the skies, bodies and changing seas of the coastal town. In the later years of his life, the artist has become absorbed by everything around him and many of the works on display are an ode to the place he now calls home.

Brought up in a large family with a mix of Indian, Scottish, French and Welsh heritage his world changed dramatically from the forests of the hilltop station in Udhagamandalam to Kensington at the age of 11.  Robin attended Hammersmith Art School. In many ways his work is always suspended between a Eurasian world.
